The Claim

The Claim

By the closing date of 20th February 2004 at noon GMT a prime number with at least one million decimal digits will have been found. Its value in the form of its full decimal expansion must be made public before the closing date. The number must have passed a proven primarity test.

If there is significant doubt about the validity of a claimed find then the claim judge may wait for up to one year after the closing date for the primarity to be confirmed by an independent team using a different computer and independently written software.

Judge's Statement

Standard ambiguity clause: If the wording is found to be ambiguous I will judge on the basis of the obvious intent. If the intent is ambiguous I will judge on the basis of precise wording. If both are ambiguous or if both are clear but conflict, I will look for a solution that causes the least damage to FX as a market and game.

I intend to monitor the Usenet group sci.crypt and the Web pages in the author's text for announcements and confirmations.

The sci.math FAQ above appears to be obsolete; here is another.

If you know of a prime larger than the 37th known Mersenne Prime (2^3021377-1, 909526 digits), please drop the judge a note.

The Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) has announced at http://www.mersenne.org/prime.htm that another Mersenne Prime has been discovered and verified in June 1999. According to GIMPS staff, the size of the prime will not be announced until actual publication. It is expected that it will fulfill the YES requirement for this claim.
