The Claim

Lucent Technologies has proposed Inferno for use by the Internet community. Some comments attributed to Rob Pike entitled Inferno: la Commedia Interattiva have indicated that Lucent feels that Inferno is a strong competitor to Java from Sun Microsystems.

Limbo is a new interpreted programming language developed at Bell Labs which claims to solve a number of problems in modern programming practice.

The claim is YES if an Inferno-based platform is replaces the Java/Netscape platform as the ubiquitously available Internet standard.

To be ubiquitously available

  1. Netscape must support Limbo-compiled applets on an equal-basis with Java-compiled applets on some platform listed in Subclaim 2;
  2. There must be ports of Inferno and therefore Limbo and thereforeDis to at least following platforms:
    1. Windows 3.x
    2. Windows 95
    3. Windows NT
    4. MacOS 7.5 (or later)
    5. OS/2
    6. Solaris 2.X
    7. SunOS 4.X
    8. DECstation Ultrix
    9. DEC Alpha OSF/1
    10. DEC OpenVMS
    11. SGI IRIX
    12. HPUX HP-9000/700
    13. 88open DG AViiON
    14. IBM RS/6000 AIX
    15. SCO i386
    16. Intel SVR4 UnixWare
    17. Linux
    18. BSD (any)
For a port to `exist' it must either be
    • available for downloading off the Internet or
    • for sale with immediate delivery at some price.
The availability Limbo-compiled applets in Netscape as per #1 shall be construed to satisfy this section.
The claim pays out at:
  • $0.60, for the capability described in Subclaim 1.
  • $0.02, for each platform referred to in Subclaim 2.
    • with a premium of $0.04 paid for all platforms.
